Interviewing Your Potential Therapist
Anyone visiting a therapist has a right to interview the therapist before they engage with them. Counsellors and therapists should not become offended at being asked questions about their qualifications, competencies, or approach to therapy. Should a situation arise where a therapist is resistant to answering questions, then they may not be the best suited. In the same manner, therapists have a right to have some concerns about prospective clients who ask many questions.
As a rule, therapists generally prefer clients who are committed to therapy and willing to work through their difficulties in the therapy process. At the same time, it is the client's right to be able to obtain the relevant information. In preparation to interviewing a therapist, one thing should be in mind, and that is, therapists would prefer to meet with the prospective client, as opposed to a telephone dialogue.
- Do you have any training or background in this area?
