Mr Matthew Poll - Chartered Psychologist
I work primarily from a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) perspective. This style of therapy involves exploring the thoughts and feelings that lead to problems (such as being anxious, low or stressed). Such thoughts are then modified in order to reduce the problem to a more manageable level.
I have also been trained from a Person-centred perspective, which I incorporate into my work. This style involves allowing the client to explore and determine what he or she wants from the counselling sessions, keeping the client’s needs central throughout therapy.
Is therapy right for me – and how does it compare to other therapies?
People come to therapy for many different reasons. Some are struggling with specific feelings of sadness, anger, anxiety or hopelessness. Others may be feeling generally low or uncertain and may be searching for meaning in their lives. No one individual need is the same; however people who come for therapy are likely to want some change in themselves or their life; and CBT-based therapy is very effective way of providing this.
The therapy that I am fully qualified to deliver has been demonstrated as the “Gold Standard” treatment of choice in addressing Anxiety and Depression-related problems- often proving more effective than medication. CBT is recommended as the most effective, evidence-based therapy within the NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) guidelines www.nice.org.uk. These are the guidelines that doctors use to identify the best treatments for their patients. Few other ‘therapies’ feature in these guidelines as having any evidence of effectiveness
Can I speak to you first to find out if this is right for me? Yes, you are welcome to contact me on 07817575327

If I am with a client my phone will be switched off but please a message and I will return your call promptly.
What Happens next?
You can call or leave me a message on my mobile number. I will return your call and we can arrange a time to meet if you so wish. The first session will be set aside for an assessment and for us to decide whether or not we would like to work together; following which you can decide whether therapy is right for you. There is no obligation to commit to future sessions following the first session and all sessions are on a pay-per-session basis with no long-term contractual obligations. I usually see clients for an average of 8 - 10 sessions – depending on the problems people are bringing. Any information relating to yourself and the process of any therapy we conduct will remain confidential.
What does it cost?
I currently charge £60 - £80 per session if you are paying directly and dependant on income/means to pay, with sessions lasting 1 hour and typically taking place on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. I am able to charge on a sliding scale dependent on individual circumstances and/ or dependant on whether you are utilising private health insurance.
