Mrs Nicky Vanstone - Play Therapist
Since a young age I have always taken a keen interest in child development and behaviour. Before and after studying for my degree in Psychology I worked on several different voluntary schemes in Kenya and Malawi. These involved working in schools and nurseries with a varying range of ages. This inspired me to go on and have a carer supporting children to help them lead more fulfilling and happy lives.
I was drawn to becoming a Play Therapist when I worked in a refuge with children who had been traumatised. I felt there were not enough services to support children and adolescents who needed to be able to express their emotions in their own language.
Non – directive Play Therapy allows children and adolescents to work through different emotions around past and present events at their own pace. Many children do not have the vocabulary or language to express them selves freely, play being their preferred method of communication. Older children often prioritise talking during their sessions but play is often used when working through traumatic events in early childhood.
As a relatively young therapist I have a lot of energy and enthusiasm which is often needed when engaging young people in therapy. I also feel the young people can relate and relax with me.
