Relationships form the most important part of our lives and are essential in almost everything we do, without relationships we wouldn't really have a life; we wouldn't have learnt how to do anything . When we look back on our lives we do not remember many memories but the relationships we form are never forgotton. Everyone experiences problems in a relationship at one point which could be with a friend, lover, member of the family or even a work collegue. Sometimes relationships can be demanding and upsetting with frequent arguments which is why there is a whole support network to provide advice and help to those in need.
Relationships are able to offer love, support, friendship, advice and guidance, some people find they have a bond with another person which can make them extremely happy and can last a lifetime. However, lots of people have difficulty being in a relationship especially with a lover due to the choices or actions we make, relationship history and the fact that everyone is different and reacts differently to situations or emotions.
A relationship with a lover is often the hardest type to stay in and there are certain factors that must be present in order for the relationship to function properly:
Ensuring the relationship is a priority
Differences can be sorted without intimidation or threat of leaving
Both partners feel protected and special by the other
There is a sexual relationship
Honesty, commitment and communication is essential
No abuse occurs
Feelings and needs can be shared
Unconditional love for the other
Both individuals feel comfortable and able to express themselves
Neither partner feels they are being forced to stay in the relationship
Both partners listen to the needs of the other
Arguments can be prevented
We learn what it takes to be in a successful relationship only through experience; we are not taught how to manage them at school, we learn the skills by practicing them. This often means that first relationships (especially with a partner) can be less successful due to less knowledge about what it takes to be in a successful relationship; sometimes people constantly make mistakes because they never understood how to properly be in one.
