Play Therapy
Play is a child’s way of communicating and expressing themselves, it is vital for their creative, social, emotional, physical, mental and language development. It helps children to learn about themselves and the world around them.
Play therapy helps children to express how they are feeling even if they can’t find the words to describe their emotions. It is based on a child centered approach, through a variety of art and play the child is supported by the therapist to express and understand their emotions. Often children have barriers to learning when they have not had the chance to express their feelings.
What will the child do
I use a non-directive approach where the child leads the sessions and chooses from a range of art and play materials. By doing this they build a trusting relationship and feel safe to express their emotions. If I feel the child is stuck with a particular issue I can help direct and support them to work through their emotions.
Art, drama, role-play, storytelling, music, puppets, dance and movement, sand trays and clay.
Play therapy can help children with a range of difficulties
• Learning or behavioral difficulties • Emotional problems • Suffered bereavement • Family breakdown • Communication problems • Suffered abuse or neglect • Nightmares • Being bullied or bullying other children • Aggressive outbursts
What can it help
Play therapy provides a safe space for children to re-enact or play out traumatic events in their past and cope better with their future. They may learn to manage relationships and conflict in a more appropriate manner.
Increased confidence and self esteem
can improve the child’s
• Anxiety levels

• Relationships at home and school
• Concentration
• Ability to express themselves appropriately

Typical Sessions
One to one sessions or small groups with up to three children for forty-five minutes each week. Most children have at least 12 sessions but more sessions can be provided if there is a need
A referral form needs to be filled in with the parent or carer and the child. A parental / carer consent form needs to be signed before therapy can begin.
The sessions need to take place in a private, safe room at the same time each week.
