Colon hydrotherapy

Colon hydrotherapy is a gentle, safe treatment that can be used as part of a general cleansing and detoxification programme, or to address specific digestive or elimination issues. The objective is to rebalance the colon by harmonising the natural intestinal flora within it.

Colon hydrotherapy is also known as colonic irrigation, high colonic, entero-lavage, or simply, colonic. Cleansing the colon with the use of hydrotherapy is not a new concept. It was first recorded in 1500 BC and has been practiced over thousands of years. Before you take the treatment, your practitioner will review your symptoms and provide objective and informed advice about the potential benefits for you personally.

Why have colon hydrotherapy?

The indigestible portion of the food you eat lodges in the large intestine and stays there until eliminated in a bowel movement. Infrequent movements or constipation can result in partial decomposition of these waste substances, which encrust the colon and hinder elimination. These toxins are reabsorbed into the bloodstream, lowering the body's defence against bacteria and viruses. The body strains to fight against the poisons, and if the effort is too great, various organs or even whole systems can break down. Early indications of this futile war against waste may include sallow skin, nervous irritability, coated tongue, bad breath, offensive body odour, headaches, bloating, poor appetite, indigestion, and stomach heaviness.

What are the benefits of colon hydrotherapy?

A colonic can help with:

  • allergies and intolerances
  • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • constipation
  • diarrhoea
  • flatulence
  • bloating
  • skin problems
  • headaches
  • Candida (thrush/yeast infections)

A colonic also:

  • cleanses the colon of toxins (Enabling your colon to once again function as it was intended)
  • exercises the colon and improves peristalsis (The build-up of toxic debris weakens the colon muscles and impairs the way they work)
  • reshapes the colon (Abnormal conditions inside the colon tend to alter its shape, which can cause problems)
  • eliminates bulging pockets of waste and narrowed, spastic constrictions (The gentle action of the water, coupled with the massage techniques of the therapist, enable the colon to resume its natural state)
  • stimulates reflex points, to the benefit of corresponding body parts (Because via reflex points, the colon connects to every system and organ of the body)

And that’s not all. Other benefits include:

  • improved complexion and hair
  • higher energy levels
  • elimination of toxins
  • raised function levels for the entire body
  • hastened healing processes in the body
  • increased circulation and elimination
  • assisted efficiency of the cardiovascular and circulatory system
  • toning of the colon
  • calming of the nervous system

What exactly is colon hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy involves gentle, continual bathing of the colon by infusing warm filtered water into the rectum. This process enables the water to cleanse the large intestine, resulting in a gentle release. During the treatment, purified and filtered temperature-controlled water is fed into the colon (the large intestine) at a controlled rate. Although his process is sometimes uncomfortable, it’s not painful.

The water flow triggers a response in which the patient begins to expel the water and waste through a tube that allows the therapist to monitor the expelled bowel contents. The response is known as peristalsis, which is a distinctive pattern of smooth muscle contractions that propel foodstuffs through the digestive tract. During the treatment, the therapist gently massages the patient's abdomen to help dislodge impacted matter.

An enema only removes new waste from the last section of the large intestine, whereas colon hydrotherapy cleanses the entire large intestine, without the need to hold water for any length of time.

Are several sessions required?

Every individual is different and subject to varying stresses, so there no standard number of treatments is recommended. During the initial treatments, only gas and recent waste may be expelled, so several treatments may be required to eliminate impacted matter and restore bowel regularity. Generally, we suggest a course of three to six treatments over a period of about six weeks, after which the situation should be reviewed with the therapist. The first few sessions can take about 40 to 60 minutes. After that, treatment time is usually reduced to 20 to 45 minutes.

Is it beneficial for men?

Certainly. You may be surprised to learn that about 40% of our clients are men, including a number of professional sportsmen. Men come to us for many of the same reasons that women do – they may want a detox, a kick-start to a healthy eating regime, or a pre-season tune up. Or they may have problems with bloating, their bowels in general, or their skin.

Are there any after-effects?

Colon hydrotherapy has a profound cleansing effect on the body. You may experience a strong feel-good-factor afterwards, and wish to significantly increase your normal physical exercise levels. We advise caution. Although light to moderate exercise is good if you are used to it, any strenuous activity should be avoided for 24 hours after the treatment. Instead, you should rest and drink plenty of water. We recommend you to eat lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and fibre, and avoid refined or processed food, fizzy drinks, alcohol and caffeine. And although irrigating the colon does not remove all of the intestinal bacteria, it may be beneficial to take probiotics to maintain bacterial balance. Live yoghurt with acidophilus is recommended because it is an active cleanser that adds vital forces to the colon.

If you have had certain conditions, such as habitual constipation or irritable bowel syndrome, for a while, tiredness may be experienced for a couple of days after the first session. The irrigation stirs up toxins, and in some cases this may cause nausea, dizziness or nervousness. Usually, this indicates that the body is continuing detoxification processes that were started by the treatment. But many people do not experience these symptoms.Treatments
