Homeopathy

Homeopathy is an effective and statistically proven system of healing which works by assisting the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. Like other holistic therapies, homeopathy recognises that symptoms of ill health are evidence of disharmony within the whole person, so it is the patient who needs treatment rather than the disease.

How does homeopathy work

Homeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body’s own healing power. Because this power is considerable, many complaints heal themselves unaided, but when the healing process is faulty, blocked or slow, the homeopathic remedy serves to stimulate the curative powers of the body.

Homeopathic remedies are not addictive and have no side effects. Sometimes, however, a homeopathic remedy temporarily aggravates the condition which has led to the need for treatment – this is normal, and indicates that the treatment is working.

An orthodox German physician, Samuel Christian Hahnemann, discovered homeopathy about 200 years ago. According to the homoeopathic principles he established, remedies are never routinely repeated and never combined with other remedies. In order to avoid side effects, Hahnemann worked to establish the smallest effective dose. To his surprise, he found that using a unique method of serial dilution and succussion (agitation) increased the potency of the remedy.

The concept that a small does produced in this way is more effective than a large dose can now be explained by modern science. Beginning with a micro-dose of homoeopathically prepared remedy kick-starts the body’s self-curing mechanism. As the mechanism works to restore equilibrium throughout the body, the symptoms begin gradually to diminish. But because the body adapts to the stimulation, the potency of each subsequent dose needs to be a little stronger, which is achieved by a process called plussing.

The direction of cure is always from inside out, from above downwards, and from more vital organs to less vital organs. The result is that symptoms disappear in the reverse order of their appearance.

What happens during a consultation

In order to select the best homeopathic remedy for the individual, in addition to evaluating the symptoms that prompted the patient’s visit, the homeopath also conducts an extensive interview about their medical history, family history and general state of mind.

During the interview, the homeopath gathers all relevant subjective and objective information. This enables the practitioner to build a unique multi-dimensional picture of the person’s disharmony. This data is used by the homeopath to systematically select the single remedy that is most similar to the person’s overall state. The patient is then recommended the smallest possible dose of the remedy that will achieve a curative response. Recommendations are also normally made for rest, appropriate diet and exercise, to help support rapid and lasting recovery.

A follow up appointment is then made, for when an appropriate time has elapsed. It’s important for the client to report back without delay, to avoid forgetting what happened right after the remedy was taken. Otherwise, a short-lived improvement may be overlooked or an important clue missed.

This also prevents needless waiting if there is no positive response after the administration of a remedy, in which case a different potency or remedy may be required. The timing of the follow-up appointment is important, and varies depending on the type of case, the pace and severity of the disease, the potency, and the particular remedy administered. If the client reports too soon, the effects of the remedy may not have develop sufficiently. But if too much time elapses, the effect of the remedy might not be recalled, which could result in the treatment needing to begin again.

The changes during homeopathic treatment are sometimes very subtle, because the treatment is approached gently. They need to be observed and recorded, and then interpreted by the homeopath, in order to understand the results and follow up the treatment effectively.

How are homeopathic remedies taken

Your homeopath will provide full instructions. Remedies are normally taken in one of three ways:

·         A dry dose – taken directly under the tongue?

·         A plussed dose – dissolved in water?

·         An LM Dose – (which is gentler) taken in water
